Roles of the standards

OMOP

A harmonised data model for research, analytics and secondary use. Useful when multiple source systems need to come together in one analytical model.

FHIR

HL7's standard for structured data exchange and APIs. Relevant for operational interoperability and modern digital workflows.

SMART on FHIR

A framework for building and integrating FHIR-based applications. Relevant in extensible application ecosystems.

openEHR

One approach to modelling structured clinical information. May be relevant in certain architectural contexts — not a universal default.

Four use contexts

  • Research — secondary use, OMOP harmonisation, cohort production, reproducibility.
  • Data-driven steering — operational steering, situational picture, population-level analytics.
  • Operational use — interoperability, process automation, integrations.
  • Clinical / frontline — decision support and workflows that fit the actual work.

How regulation and privacy show up in implementation

Regulatory requirements don't sit as a separate compliance layer — they are built into the solution. Privacy by design, RBAC, auditing, controlled environments, documented ownership and purpose-bound use are part of delivery, not constraints added afterwards.

EHDS — short take

EHDS is the EU's regulatory and interoperability framework. It affects both primary and secondary use of health data — but it is not one centralised database and not one technical platform. Implementation proceeds in stages and reaches into data platforms, data models, access rights, secondary-use processes and national execution. Invinite's view: EHDS raises the bar but doesn't remove the need for good architecture and clear ownership.
