OMOP in practice: what implementation really requires
OMOP is useful when multiple source systems need to come together in one analytical model. It isn't automation — it's a harmonisation contract.
OMOP is a contract, not a translator
OMOP CDM provides the structure, but harmonisation work is always interpretation tied to the source systems and content. Installing the tools doesn’t deliver the answer.
Typical realities
Source systems aren’t ready to express concepts as OMOP vocabularies. ETL implementation isn’t a one-shot script but a documented, ongoing process. Vocabulary mappings live and breathe — versioning them matters as much as versioning code.
Takeaway
What decides an OMOP project’s success is how the harmonisation work is documented and who maintains it — not which tool was chosen.
